Automatic generation of the custom field?

Hi,

I've been trying to modify FCG so the user does not have to supply the 'articleimg' custom field.

I'm able to set up a custom thumbnail size to fit my FCG homepage slider; ie the custom image can be referenced for example with:
<img alt="<?php the_title(); ?>" src="<?php echo auto_get_postimage('custom0'); ?>" />

Similarly, I could set the default WP "attachment-medium" size equal to my FCG homepage image.

So far I've hit a wall in trying to get it called directly from FCG. I was hoping I could similarly reference 'custom0' or 'medium' instead of 'articleimg' in the gallery.php, but that would have been too easy.

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to go about automating the custom field (key) value or referencing an already existing value per above?
