Can I make HTML links work in FCG?

I don't want to use custom excerpts for all the posts included in FCG. But many of our news site's stories have internal or external HTML links in the first paragraph, and the raw code is of course showing up in the gallery. I know I could stop that by creating custom excerpts, but it's too much work for our editors. Is there a way to make the links work as links in the gallery, or, alternatively, be able to create custom excerpts for only those posts that have the offending link within the first 40 words?
